As a help for those who are new to the music of Gruppo Sportivo (and related):
Which recordings would you recommend as 'essential'? And why?
Which albums need one to hear to get a good picture of GS/it's musicians, which albums contain the most defining music? Perhaps you think of the debut album, perhaps you think of an album with more matured music. Perhaps there's a studio recording that contains the best or maybe there's a live-album that managed to contain the 'soul' of the band in it's best form. Or simply list your favorites!
I'm not looking for discussion but for opinions: it's your private opinion that matters regardless what other people may think of it. Although I'm Dutch, I ask this question specifically in the English forum as I'd love to hear opinions from GS fans from all over the world, not just from the Netherlands.

My favorite Gruppo recording would be Second life. It contains 17 + 5 classic Gruppo songs. It is a live recording (acoustic) of exceptional quality. Compared to other Gruppo records it seems that more musicians are participating and the instruments which are used are somewhat different (Banjo, horns, sax etc.) Overall the sound is just awesome.
The other double cd I can strongly recommend is Young and Out. The songs may not be as well known as on others, but especially the ones on the Young cd are great.
I am not sure if the mentioned cd's are still in print. However, every now and then they are listed on ebay.

Thx Gijs! For the newbies: old GS records have been released a couple of years ago as '2 LPs on 1 CD' packages. They've been unavailable for some time, I was told bankruptcy from the distributor caused this. I just got an email informing me that one of the sets arrived at my record store! I assume it means that - Back To '78/Copy Copy - Pop! Goes The Brain/Design Moderne - Buddy Odor Is A Gas/10 Mistakes can all be ordered again.

married with singles would be an obvious introduction, but the pop! goes the brain/design moderne cd showcases gruppo at both their (lyrically) funniest and their (musically) sturdiest.

Once you get into them, they are all essential, but the first album "10 mistakes" is what started it all, made me Gruppie in 1978 and has to be the first purchase in my mind. Another dan posting above or Mr. Silverman? Beep Beep, julian

yep that's me, "mr. silverman". i do acknowledge that 10 mistakes is where it all started for me. when i heard "beep beep love" on the radio in ny (wpix) in 1979, my life changed forever, really! so maybe 10 mistakes is the best intro after ll

For me it started when i heard their single "Rock 'n Roll" on the radio and even my mother liked the song so much! Then ofcourse i bought 10 mistakes and i think its the most played LP or CD for me ever!

If my copy of 'Back to 78' would've been vinyl, it would've been grey by now (but no, it's still shiny ).

10 Mistakes started it all for me. In the old vinyl days. Followed it up with Back To 78, and then Buddy Odour. Especially like the poppy A side and the slightly jazzy B side...
Wasn't too crazy about the synths to the fore of Pop Goes The Brain, but "If Beauty Is" a great track ! ... Topless 16 retains the old Gruppo Sound with the freshness of today, music and production wise.
Anybody got any thoughts or reviews of Rock Now - Roll Later ? (Which I have yet to hear ?)
Cheers.

Hi Robert, "Rock Now Roll Later" is a strange one indeed. CD 1 is only eight tracks of "newish" stuff. However only three tracks appear for the first time. The other five for some reason are from the recent (and brilliant) Topless 16. Not sure where the logic lies with that. However, it is worth buying just for the brand new opening track DoReMeFaSoLaTiDo, another bona fide Vandefruits classic. Top Forty City is also here on CD for the first time (probably from the Topless16 sessions and appears live on the limited edition four song DVD given away with early copies of Topless 16. I hope you have it!) and Green Utopia Bay. I wish they had also put the website download "Pop Eyes" on as well - did you find that while hunting around yet? CD2 is a full eighteen tracks. Mainly consisting of A and B sides from singles that never made the "Married with Singles" CD plus a few rarities. you will have most of this stuff, but not all. So go get it anyway! I did. Cheers, Julian

I bought all GS lp's when they were first released and now I am listening to the CD Gruppo Sportivo [CD Album] Back To 19 Mistakes, which is a recommended 'best of' GS or at least the CD has all my favorite GS songs
